Ellenâs hat business was growing without her having to do anything. Miss LeDrew and Mrs. Redmond from Lady Gloverâs art group had both been pleased with their hats and had referred her to their friends. The result was that she had orders for two more hats that needed to be completed by September fifteenth. Ellen was longing to make a new design, but both women wanted the bonnet-hat, so she was happy enough to oblige. Once she and Alexander were married, she would no longer be working at Government House and she could devote all her time to her business. She would have plenty of time to design new styles then.
Louise and Kenneth seemed happy that Ellen wasnât giving them any more trouble about marrying Alexander. He came to the house almost every day after work for a short time, and he was invited to stay for dinner twice. He and Ellen were always chaperoned. If they went for a walk, they were accompanied by Kenneth. In fact, Kenneth enjoyed talking with Alexander and had started calling him by his given name. Ellenâs mother still called him Mr. Pindikowsky.
Alexander and Ellen were allowed to sit together alone on the back veranda and talk. They knew they could be overheard, so their conversation was censored and revolved around Alexanderâs progress at the Presentation Convent and the business that Kielly and Alexander were starting. Alexander calculated that his work at the convent would be completed by the middle of October and he and Kielly were going to start advertising for new work in the paper within the next couple of weeks. Since fresco painting was an expensive process, they were also going to advertise to do murals and wall stencilling as well. Alexander really would have liked to do all fresco work, but he knew that that would be too limiting for the small client base of St. Johnâs. It was Kenneth who suggested that he try for work at the Athenaeum.
âAlexander,â he said, walking out onto the veranda two weeks after the initial dinner confrontation, âhave you considered looking for work at the Athenaeum? I donât know if youâve been at the new theatre, but it really is in dire need of decoration. I know the owner, Mr. Fairmont, and I could give you a reference if you think it would help.â
âThat is very generous of you, Mr. Robinson. I think that is a wonderful idea. I will go there as soon as I can.â
âYou can call me Kenneth, Alexander. Youâre making me feel like an old man, calling me Mr. Robinson.â
âThank you very much, but I think I should still call you Mr. Robinson until Mrs. Robinson calls me Alexander.â
âYouâre probably right there,â said Kenneth, winking at Ellen. âDonât stay out much longer, itâs getting cold,â he said, going back inside.
âAlen,â whispered Alexander, âdo you think we can meet tonight?â
âI wish we could,â she whispered back, âbut Mother is watching me too closely. In another week or two sheâll stop being so vigilant, and then we can be together.
